Summary


The recent Classification of Nigeria, Kenya and Egypt by Kaspersky lab as easiest Cyberattack target in Africa with about Five Hundred and seventy-seven (577) attempted malware attacks hourly, is a serious wake up call to the government and the stakeholders in the Cybersecurity industry. This was disclosed in the company’s second quarter Spam and phishing 2020 report.

Description & Consequence


The antivirus giant gave an insight into a planned massive cyber-attacks by some hacking firms. The plan attacks likely targets are military, education, health care and diplomatic institution in Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya.

This premeditated network intrusion and cyber-attack if successful can have severe impacts on Nigerian cyberspace and cybersecurity industry. Particularly if the compromise becomes public and sensitive information is exposed. Possible impacts may include, temporary or permanent loss of sensitive or proprietary information, disruption to regular operations, financial losses relating to restoring systems and files, and potential harm to an organization’s reputation.

Solution


ngCERT is hereby advising all stakeholder to take a proactive measures and ensure strict compliance with Cybersecurity global best practices to safeguard systems, networks and Nigerian cyberspace at large. They are:

  1. Keep software and browser updated and visit https websites only.
  2. Create a strong password & enable WPA2 and AES Security.
  3. Do not use unsecure or open Wi-Fi for online transaction.
  4. Check social media privacy settings frequently.
  5. Create secure email and online accounts.
  6. Practice principles of defense-in-depth
  7. Ensure regular back-up of data.
  8. Ensure cybersecurity education and awareness for all personnel
  9. Cyber hygiene, cyber safety and information security should be taken more seriously.
