Summary

This is a reminder that Microsoft will no longer support Windows 8.1 as from January 10, 2023. The Extended Security Update (ESU) programme for Windows 7 Professional and Enterprise versions will also end January 10, 2023 – meaning these versions of Windows 7 will no longer be receiving security updates to patch critical vulnerabilities.

Description & Consequence

Windows 7 was released back in 2009 and reached its end date in January 2015. Its end date was extended to January 2020 and for those customers that needed particular important applications past this end date, the ESU programme was initiated which gives them critical security updates for a maximum of three years after the end of the extended end date.

Windows 8.1, however, was released in November 2013 and reached its end date in January 2018. Its extended end date will elapse on January 10, 2023.

An OS that is no longer supported with patches and security updates will be prone to attacks as any inherent vulnerability that may be exposed will remain untreated. Consequently, it is not recommended that such an OS be in use especially for sensitive functions.

Solution

The following upgrade paths should be considered by those still using either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1:

  1. Upgrade to Microsoft’s latest OS Windows 11 if your devices meet up with its strict hardware requirements.
  2. If your hardware does not meet up with the technical requirements for Windows 11, then upgrade to Windows 10 which will be supported until October 14, 2025.
